Pre-Conceptual Advice
Please book an appointment with your GP who will discuss the following areas with you: smoking, alcohol, exercise & diet, substance abuse, folic acid, rubella status, inherited conditions e.g. Huntington’s chorea and other family history e.g. twin pregnancies, and any pre-existing medical conditions, and the impact of your partner’s health on the ability to conceive.
Family Planning
The practice provides a full family planning service including oral contraception (“the pill”), cervical diaphragms (“the cap”), intra-uterine devices (“the coil”), injections and implants. Patients should book a consultation with one of the doctors first.
Cervical Cytology
Current policy: Women aged under 25 should not be screened as their risk of developing cervical cancer is very low and, at this age screening may do more harm than good. Women aged between 25 – 49 years should have tests every three years and women between 50 – 64 years should have tests every five years, unless requested to have them more frequently by the laboratory. Women aged 65 years and over should only be screened if they have not been screened since the age of 50 or have had a recently abnormal result. Please mention that you are requesting an appointment for a smear test when making your appointment. Our practice nurses carry out all smear tests, unless otherwise requested.
Maternity Care
Pregnancy tests and maternity care are available. Once the pregnancy has been confirmed, we will arrange an appointment for you at our antenatal clinic.
